The project began with a request from a small research archive that needed a structured way to introduce new contributors to its cataloging system. We started by mapping the actual sequence a contributor follows when they join the archive. The steps were: account creation, reading the style guide for transcribing cuneiform signs, uploading a sample scan of a tablilla, and receiving feedback from the editorial board. Instead of building a custom platform from scratch, we adapted a static site generator to serve these steps as a linear, non‑interactive checklist. Each step was a separate page with clear instructions and a reference to the archive’s internal standards for physical measurements of the clay and the angle of the stylus marks.
The portal was built as a set of HTML pages with a shared navigation bar that showed the contributor’s progress. The style guide page included a table of common wedge shapes and their corresponding phonetic values, taken directly from the archive’s internal manual. The upload page used a simple form that accepted image files and stored them in a dated folder on the server. No database was used; instead, a plain text log recorded each submission with a timestamp and the contributor’s initials. The entire system was deployed on a shared hosting account and required no maintenance beyond occasional file cleanup.
Over a six‑month period, the portal was used by four new contributors. The archive reported that the time to onboard a new person dropped from an average of three weeks to four days. The consistency of the submitted scans improved because the style guide was always accessible. The editorial board could review submissions in a single folder instead of searching through email attachments. One contributor noted that the linear format made it easy to understand the archive’s expectations without needing a phone call. The project remains in use and has required no technical updates since launch.
